England & Wales Cricket Board biography

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is the governing body for cricket in England and Wales. The board was formed in January 1997 as a result of the merger of the Test and County Cricket Board (TCCB) and the London-based organisation that governed English cricket. The ECB's role is to oversee and coordinate all aspects of cricket in England and Wales, from grassroots and development programmes to the Ashes and international tours. The ECB is also responsible for selecting and managing the England cricket team.

England & Wales Cricket Board controversies

The ECB has had its fair share of controversies over the years. One of the most notable was the sacking of Kevin Pietersen from the England cricket team in 2014. Pietersen, one of England's most successful batsmen of all time, was axed for what the ECB called "issues of trust." The decision was highly controversial, with many fans and media pundits questioning the ECB's motives. Another controversy was the decision to replace Alastair Cook as England captain with Joe Root in 2017. Cook, who had led England for a record 59 Test matches, was widely respected by his teammates and the cricketing community, and many felt that his dismissal was premature. The ECB has also faced criticism for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, with some claiming that the board prioritised financial concerns over player safety.
